Best time to visit Svartifoss and Skaftafell

June to August gives the longest days and the easiest walking. Winter brings ice caves, snow and about four hours of daylight. Spring and autumn sit between the two.

The short answer

Go between June and August if you want the simplest visit: long days, the trail at its clearest and the most services running. Go between November and March if ice caves are the reason you are coming. Spring and autumn are quieter but less predictable.

Svartifoss can be walked in every month. The park describes the forest path as worth taking at any time of year, and it keeps the visitor centre and campsite open all year. What changes is the surface, the daylight and how much else is running.

Daylight

Daylight is the biggest seasonal difference. These figures are for Höfn, 130 km east of Skaftafell, from timeanddate.

Date Sunrise Sunset Daylight
21 June 2026 02:25 23:39 21 h 14 min
14 October 2026 07:48 17:44 9 h 56 min
21 December 2026 10:57 15:00 4 h 3 min

In June you can walk in the evening and still have light. In December the whole walk fits between late morning and mid-afternoon, so start from the car park at first light.

Weather and climate

The nearest published climate table we found is Wikipedia’s for Kirkjubæjarklaustur, 70 km west, covering 1981 to 2010. The park says the weather in Skaftafell can often be much better than in neighbouring areas, because it sits in the shelter of Öræfajökull, so read these as a rough guide.

Month Mean temperature Precipitation
January 0.1 °C 157 mm
April 3.3 °C 121 mm
July 11.6 °C 123 mm
October 4.6 °C 163 mm
Whole year 4.9 °C 1,700 mm

Every month has more than 100 mm, and May is the driest at 104 mm. For Höfn, Wikipedia’s 1961 to 1990 table gives about 141 hours of sunshine in July against 26 in January. Dress for rain whenever you come, and check the Icelandic Met Office forecast and warnings for the south-east before you go. The park warns that flooding, sandstorms and snow can all happen at any time of year.

Season by season

Spring (April and May). The park says spring starts in April, with melting snow, mud and fragile ground. Hiking routes are often closed to prevent damage. The Skaftafellsheiði circuit (S3) is generally impassable in spring because of wet mud and can stay closed until mid-June, and the Kristínartindar route (S4) is usually closed from early spring, sometimes into June. The park does not list a seasonal closure for the Svartifoss path, but check its announcements before you go. The campsite’s outdoor taps stay off until mid-May because of frost. Fjallsárlón boat tours start in April (see Fjallsárlón).

Summer (June to August). The park calls summer the most popular season. The visitor centre opens 9am to 7pm, and in 2026 the park’s free ranger walks from the visitor centre ran daily from 15 June to 15 August. In spring and early summer the park asks walkers on the Sjónarnípa route to bear nesting birds in mind. This is the best time for the hike described in the Svartifoss hike, and the busiest.

Autumn (September and October). The park says autumn sets in during September and colours change. Weather can be still or rough, so check the forecast. The visitor centre closes at 6pm. The first ice cave tours begin in September or October with some operators.

Winter (November to March). The park says snow covers the hills, and roads and footpaths may be slippery. It advises crampons. The visitor centre opens 10am to 5pm from December to February. Only zones A and C of the campsite are open. Visit Vatnajökull notes that outlet glaciers look blue in winter rather than white. Guide to Iceland says winter has far fewer visitors than summer. The park’s 2026 programme lists a ghost walk on 31 October and a Yule Lads event on 12 December at Skaftafell.

These ranges come from the operators’ own pages and the park, checked in October 2026. Each company sets its own season, so treat the table as the common ground.

Operators differ. Glacier Guides lists its Skaftafell glacier hikes as running all year, and Icelandic Mountain Guides lists a three-hour Skaftafell hike all year. Local Guide of Vatnajökull lists its glacier hikes from May to September and its ice cave tours from October to April. For ice caves, Glacier Guides lists its hike-and-cave tour from Skaftafell from September to March, and a cave tour from Jökulsárlón from October to April. Another operator lists November to March.

The caves themselves are natural, so the season is not fixed. A park notice in autumn 2024 said that ice formations under an ice roof can be extremely dangerous at certain times of year. The guide decides each day. Read ice caves and glacier hikes for what to expect, and browse tours for dates.

A winter walk with few people December to February Visitor centre open 10am to 5pm, about four hours of daylight and ice underfoot

Safetravel publishes alerts for strong wind, rain, sleet and snow that can mention icy roads, poor visibility and closures, so keep a spare day in your plan rather than fixing every hour. Its winter driving advice is to wait somewhere safe until the weather improves.

Crowds

The park calls summer the most popular season. Guide to Iceland says winter is much quieter. We found no official visitor counts by hour or month, so treat both as general guidance. Guide to Iceland suggests midday for photographs of Svartifoss, because the gorge shades the falls early and late.

When we would go

For the hike alone, late May to early September, and book glacier activities ahead. For ice caves, between November and March. For a trip with less going on, the shoulder months of May and September, with a flexible plan for the weather.

If you are planning the journey, see getting there, and read safety before any winter visit.
